It’s that time again. I’ve gone ahead and submitted a few pieces to the American Art Awards. This is an online art competition where 25 of the best galleries in the US judge the submitted artwork. Anything from traditional, photography, photo-manipulation, digital, and even sculpture have a place to be seen. 300 pieces of art will place 1st through 6th in each of the 52 categories. It’s an awesome way to get your artwork seen! Last year I entered for the first time, although it was the second year running for the contest. I didn’t expect to place at all. Of course, I hoped…but never outright expected anything. Just some random thoughts… When did artwork become “for use” instead of just to look at and enjoy? We don’t walk into an art gallery, see a piece we like, take it off the wall and leave (unless we legally purchased it). So why do so many assume that online art galleries are any different? Because the access is easier, perhaps? Because it’s anonymous and no one knows they took the art vs. in a brick-and-mortar gallery, they’d be caught red-handed? There are so many who assume that once the work is online, it’s free to take and use as they wish. But they wouldn’t be caught dead doing that in a real gallery. Why the double standard?
